FRESNO COUNTY — October 26, 2026. California has designated an approximately one-mile section of Millerton Road, between Millerton Lake State Recreation Area and the Table Mountain Rancheria tribal area, as the Central Valley’s first State Priority Safety Corridor.

This is a winding rural route used by people living near the lake, visitors, tribal community members and emergency vehicles. Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig welcomed the designation and cited serious and fatal crashes as a reason for immediate action.

What could change for drivers?

California’s road-safety initiative identifies a potential roundabout at Winchell Cove Road, centerline rumble strips, new pavement markings, curve-warning signs with flashing beacons and speed-feedback signs among the measures that may be used. Agencies may also conduct public education and targeted enforcement against dangerous driving.

These are possible measures, not a statement that construction is complete or that a new roundabout is already open. The state announcement did not provide a final construction start date or detailed traffic-detour schedule for every improvement.

Why a rural corridor was selected

The state used a High Injury Network approach developed with UC Berkeley SafeTREC to analyze 2020–2024 fatal and serious-injury crash patterns. Fresno County Fire Deputy Chief Ryan Michaels said preventing collisions would protect residents and leave emergency crews better able to respond to other calls.

Drivers headed toward Millerton Lake or Table Mountain Rancheria should obey existing speed limits and road signs, particularly around curves. No change to current speed limits or enforcement penalties should be inferred solely from the new designation.
